Preserved by Klassic Garage to an accurate running specification, this vehicle is available nationwide for film, television, commercial and event production, complete with optional military advisor support and in-house temporary branding.

Origins

WMIK stands for Weapons Mount Installation Kit — a reinforced roll-cage and mounting system engineered onto a standard Defender chassis to carry crew-served weapons while retaining the platform's speed and off-road agility. Developed through the 1990s and refined heavily through the following decade, the WMIK became the vehicle of choice for specialist reconnaissance and fire-support roles where mobility mattered more than armour.

Operational History

WMIK-equipped Defenders became closely associated with long-range desert patrols during operations in Iraq and later Afghanistan, where their speed and low profile suited fast-moving reconnaissance tasks across open terrain. Stripped of doors and much of the standard bodywork to save weight, they relied on speed and situational awareness rather than protection — a very different philosophy to the armoured Snatch operating in the same theatres.

Engineering & Doctrine

The reinforced chassis, uprated suspension and weapons-mount roll cage were developed iteratively as British forces gained experience in Afghanistan's terrain, eventually giving way to the up-armoured WMIK and, later, entirely new vehicle platforms as the threat from improvised explosive devices grew. The original WMIK nonetheless remains one of the most recognisable silhouettes of the British Army's operations in the 2000s.
